Helen Patterson

Helen will be speaking on ‘Safeguarding vulnerable adults’. She is a Consultant in Special Care Dentistry at NHSGCC and Honorary Secretary of the Dental Faculty at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

After working in residential care for people with disabilities for some years, Helen studied dentistry in Glasgow, graduating in 1996. She has worked in general dental practice, hospital and community services in Scotland and the US. Appointed as NHS Consultant in Special Care Dentistry in Greater Glasgow and Clyde in 2010, her clinical work focuses on the provision of oral healthcare to adults with complex needs. Helen works extensively with patients with learning and physical disabilities. Her interest is in those with medically compromising conditions and, in particular, oncology patients.

She has been an examiner for the MFDS examination and also teaches on the MFDS Part 2 preparatory course. Helen was a member of the steering group establishing the Tricollegiate Membership in Special Care Dentistry, serving as a Board Member from 2011 to 2016 and continuing to serve as an examiner. She was on the Specialty Advisory Committee in Special Care Dentistry from 2013 – 2018. Having been a Member of Dental Council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons from 2012 – 2016, she has, since 2016, been the Honorary Secretary to the Dental Faculty of RCPSG.

Recognising the increasing complexity of our population, Helen is keen to support oral healthcare professionals to understand and manage the disabilities and medical problems of their patients.
